Year In Review #3

2022-2023

Defining the Global Citizen Scholar

Now that I have finished up my third year at UC and have completed three different honors experiences, I have been able to take some time to reflect on my time in the program and think about how I would go about defining what it means to be a global citizen scholar. Since starting at UC, I have been lucky to have so many amazing opportunities provided to me, both within and separate from the honors program. In these experiences, I feel that I have been able to expand my worldview, providing me with new perspectives that I did not have as I started out in the honors program, all of which have helped me to further my definition of global citizen scholar, and what it means to me.

At this time in my academic career, I would define a global citizen scholar as someone who takes the initiative to learn about topics and issues that they may never otherwise come across in their lives. They dive into these concepts and use them to broaden their perspectives and break down existing biases they may have. After taking in these learning experiences, a global citizen scholar uses their new experiences to make a difference, whether it be big or small.

Two of the honors experiences I have completed so far were seminars that expanded my worldview in a few different ways. The first of the two was a course based on the history and current events occurring in many countries across Asia, and the second was all about energy and the environment. In both of these classes, I feel that I was able to learn so much more about both our country and the world in a way that I never would have been able to do in my normal curriculum. These were some topics that I had little to no exposure to prior to taking these seminars, and I am grateful for the opportunity I had to expand my worldview and learn about how I can make a change even just on a small scale.

Throughout the time that I have left at UC, I hope to continue working towards living up to my definition of what it means to be a global citizen scholar so that by the time I graduate, I can confidently say that I achieved what I set forward to do as a part of the honors program. Overall, I have learned so much already from my time here and I cannot wait to see where it continues to take me.
